Year  Event
1979  The Vietnamese army, backed by a force of Cambodian refugees, invaded Cambodia.
The Vietnamese installed a new Cambodian government but controlled its policy.
The country was renamed "The People's Republic of Kampuchea".
The Khmer Rouge fled to jungles on the Thai border and launched a guerrilla war.
Severe famine struck an estimated 2.5 million people leading to international food relief efforts.
1985  Khieu Samphan succeeded Pol Pot as head of the Khmer Rouge, but Pol Pot was believed to remain the real leader.
1986  Buddhism became the country's official religion.
1989  Political decision to transform the economy from a Socialist, centrally planned system to a free-market model.
Vietnamese troops withdrew and Hun Sen proclaimed the newly created country "The State of Cambodia".
