Prime Minister General Lon Nol overthrew Sihanouk in a coup.
The country was renamed "The Khmer Republic".
American and South Vietnamese troops invaded Cambodia.
Civil war erupted.
Pol Pot used the bombing to recruit support for his more extreme socialist policies.
Sihanouk, in exile in China, joined forces with the Vietnamese and Cambodian communists - including the Khmer Rouge communists.

United States congress halted bombing.
The Khmer Rouge purged moderate communists suspected of disloyalty to Pol Pot .
The Khmer Rouge nearly took control of Phnom Penh.

From 1.20am 1st January, the Khmer Rouge launched a fierce attack on Phnom Penh. Every day they fired rockets on the city from all directions. There were more than 2 million refugees there. The city was cut off from supplies except for rations provided by Western aid organisations.
