The Geneva Conference on the French-Indochina war officially recognised Cambodia's independence. France withdrew from Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.
The country was renamed The Kingdom of Cambodia.

Norodom Sihanouk abdicated the throne and his father Norodom Suramarit became king.
Prince Sihanouk and his party won the National Assembly elections and headed an autocratic government.

National Assembly elections held.

King Suramarit died and Prince Sihanouk became Head of State.

National Assembly elections held.
Pol Pot became the leader of the Cambodian communists.

Prince Sihanouk lost the elections to General Lon Nol, but Lon Nol was later toppled and Sihanouk resumed power.

United States started secretly bombing suspected Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge communist base camps in Cambodia.
