French Colonial Era

1862  France took control of South Vietnam (Cochinchina)
1863  Cambodia signed treaty to become a protectorate of France
1884  Cambodia became a French colony.
A two-year rebellion broke out in the countryside over this.
1887  France united Cambodia and Vietnam as the administrative Indochina Union.
1893  France added Laos to Indochina Union.
1907  Thailand returned land taken in 1794 that included the temples of Angkor
1916  Thousands of farmers marched into Phnom Penh to protest about taxes and forced labour, 500 arrested and imprisoned.
1941  Thailand regained territory lost in 1907, excluding Angkor.
French authorities appointed 19 year old Prince Norodom Sihanouk as King.
Japanese forces occupied Indochina setting up military bases but allowing French administrative control.
1942  Anti-French demonstrations in Phnom Penh
1945  King Sihanouk declared Cambodia's independence under Prime Minister Son Ngoc Thanh, but the French occupied Indochina again. Many of the Prime Minister's supporters escaped and continued to fight for independence as the Khmer Issarak (Free Khmer).
1946  Political parties were set up and elected for the National Assembly to advise King Sihanouk on a constitution but they had no power under French rule.
1947  Cambodia regained territory around Angkor from Thailand.
1950  Cambodian communists joined forces with the Vietnamese against French colonialism.
1951  Elections held for a new National Assembly.
The Cambodian Communist Party was formed.
