Profiles: 1990 to 2002 Transition, Democracy and Development
In a rare interview given in 1997, Pol Pot refused to acknowledge responsibility for Khmer Rouge atrocities.
In 1993 Sihanouk was crowned as king for the second time. Like the Angkorian "god king", Sihanouk has seemed to be both protector and protected, managing to retain some form of political power since becoming king in 1941 at age 19. Now that he is in his seventies and seriously ill, Cambodia's challenge is to find a future without him.
Hun Sen was Premier from 1985 to 1993 and signed the peace agreement leading to the 1993 democratic elections. After the elections he became second Prime Minister with Prince Norodom Ranariddh in a power-sharing coalition. Ranariddh led the coalition party dominated by the Khmer Rouge. The relationship was tense and in 1997, Hun Sen ousted Ranariddh. Hun Sen's party won the 1998 elections with Hun Sen becoming Prime Minister until the next elections in 2003. |
