Khmer Rouge Regime

Pol Pot
For many Cambodians, Pol Pot was a shadowy figure. Very few foreigners ever saw him or spoke to him. His real name was Saloth Sar and he was born into a peasant family in 1928. In 1949 he went to study in Paris where he joined other Cambodian students looking to solve the problems of French-controlled Cambodia. He returned to Cambodia and in 1962 became the leader of the communist party. He fled into the countryside where he trained in guerrilla tactics. After the Khmer Rouge took control he became Cambodia's Prime Minister and ruled with a select group of leaders around him.

Sihanouk
Prior to 1975 Sihanouk had served as a figurehead leader for the anti Lon Nol forces. Once in power, the Khmer Rouge regime initially gave the impression that Sihanouk was still the country's Head of State. However after the Democratic Kampuchea government was named, the regime forced Sihanouk to retire and live imprisoned in a small part of the palace. Many of his family were killed but he was kept alive only because the Chinese considered him useful.
