Lon Nol regime and civil war

Lon Nol
Lon Nol ruled with an increasingly corrupt administration. He dreamed of purifying the Khmer race, culture and Buddhist religion from foreign pollutants - creating a Buddhist military state. Lon Nol rounded up Vietnamese citizens into detention camps and executed hundreds. He also targeted ethnic Chinese living in Cambodia. Lon Nol was similar in many ways to Saloth Sar (Pol Pot). Both wanted to remove foreign influence and regain the "True Khmer" state.

Sihanouk
Sihanouk went into exile in Beijing and switched support to the Cambodian communists in their aim to topple Lon Nol. In 1973 he joined Pol Pot on a trip to Khmer Rouge-controlled areas in Cambodia.
