Jayavarman II conquered all local Khmer kingdoms. Cambodia became an artistic and religious power, and the Angkorian era began.

A succession of kings built the temples at Angkor.

The Angkor Empire was at its greatest.

Angkor fell to Thailand (Siam) and Cambodian rulers retreated to an area around Phnom Penh.

Ongoing war fought between Thailand and Cambodia, each occupying territory and retreating at various times.

Ruling Cambodian kings fought off challenges from within their own royal families. They made alliances with either Thailand or Vietnam to gain military support.

1833 The Vietnamese drove the Thai out of Cambodia.
1841 Thailand invaded Cambodia. A five-year battle started between Vietnam and Thailand on Cambodian territory.
1848 Vietnam and Thailand made peace - Thailand controlled the west of Cambodia as a protectorate and Vietnam controlled the Royal family, the capital region and the eastern part of the country.
