Cambodia: Country: People

Well over 90% of the people in Cambodia are ethnic Cambodians, or Khmers, who have been in Cambodia since at least the second century AD. The next largest group is the Vietnamese, who have lived in Cambodia for many generations. No-one knows quite how many ethnic Vietnamese live in Cambodia, but it could be anything from 100,000 to over one million. There are also about 50,000 ethnic Chinese, about 23,000 Cham Muslims and about 70,000 members of the many hill tribes that live in Cambodia's mountain regions.

There are slightly more women than men, a result of Cambodia's violent past, but the numbers are now becoming more even. The population is growing very rapidly, with nearly half the population aged under 15.
