Cambodia's troubled past has had serious effects on its economy. Almost all of the nation's skilled professionals were lost during the Khmer Rouge time, infrastructure such as roads, schools, factories and offices were destroyed and large tracts of land were rendered unusable by landmines. The country is gradually recovering, and has shown strong growth since 1999, the first full year of peace for 30 years.
Eight out of ten Cambodians work in agriculture, mainly growing rice on their own small plots of land, although there are some large rubber and timber plantations.
