Every morning before school, Navy cleans out the cowshed, and then helps her mother with breakfast. After school she has lots more jobs, collecting firewood and helping her mother prepare dinner. Her favourite job is fishing for crabs, frogs, small fish and snails in the village pond, or in the flooded rice fields. The frogs are hard to catch, and the crabs sometimes nip her with their claws, but it’s worth it because these little animals will make the family dinner much more interesting and nutritious.
The school where Navy goes doesn’t have room for all the students to go at once, so some children go in the morning, and others go in the afternoon. At the moment, Navy is in grade 4 and goes to the morning shift, from 7am until 11am. She doesn’t like maths much, but she does enjoy reading Khmer stories. Her favourite part of school is break time, when she can play with her friends. They all love skipping with the long rope.
Navy’s father Dorn died six years ago. He had been sick for two years with a stomach complaint. Even though the family sold their possessions to pay for treatment, they could not find a cure. Now Navy’s mother Siep is sick too. Some days she is too weak to work at all. Navy wants to be a nurse when she grows up, to help people like her parents when they are sick.
